tragic_mask | Le Masquerade

The ballroom itself is a burst of dazzling light. Hanging from the vaulted ceiling are two gold-wrought chandeliers, both of which glow brightly over the occasion, and tall lanterns shine throughout the room.

The grand staircase descends with a flourish and opens onto the main ballroom. A balcony, which providing a clear view of the goings-on below, runs all the way around the edge of the room. It can be reached via any of the four spiral staircases in each corner of the ballroom.

Below, the wooden dance floor flickers gently in the light from above, and musicians in the side room play soft, classical music. Meg Giry, the dance mistress for tonight, is on the floor with a microphone in hand.

A low, wooden bar in the corner provides hors d’oeuvres and drinks to revelers; small tables for two sprinkle the area.

"It's interesting," he says. "How about you? Liking this party?"

She nods.

"Remind me to send a thank you note to whoever was responsible; this was a great idea. Plus," her voice drops a fraction,

"I love an excuse to get dressed up."

"Well, you do look great in red. I'm sorry I didn't get to see it in a more intimate setting," Parker grins.

He waves a hand to the company. "Lotta people. Good party."

"Oh, I'm sure we'll be able to correct that at some point."

She nods in the direction of the party inside. "Very. The unmasking should be fun, just to see who all really was here."

"You can't tell already?" he asks.

On the other hand, where's the fun in that.

"This is the bar, though. I think by midnight, a few people'll have left with company already."

"Some are more obvious than others."

She laughs. "True enough. Maybe they'll have the good grace to rip their masks off in fits of passion before they go."

Parker snickers. "Or, we could insinuate ourselves in their party, to check. For the good of clarity, really."

He doesn't really want to right now, though, is having fun just relaxing here.

Her mouth curves in a slow, wicked smile.

"There's an idea. And it would be...a public service, really."

"Of course it would," Parker says. "The account of any evening this pretty should be clear."

He grins.

"And since the planning committee doesn't seem to have appointed any historians..."

She sighs.

"...we may just have to take on the burden ourselves."

"It's a heavy burden," he agrees. "But someone should. Times like this need to be remembered."

A hand wave indicating how heavy he sees the burden.

She pats him on the shoulder.

"Dear, responsible you. Your sacrifice will be remembered."

"I hope that others will leave my funeral in attractive groups," he says. "To honor my memory."

She slips a finger beneath her mask to wipe away a tear.

"I'll do my best to see your wishes carried out."

Parker nods, sadly.

"So, been meeting and greeting all these mysterious people? Anyone interesting?"

"Haven't done that much meet and greet," she admits.

"Been dancing mostly."

"You know how to dance?" Parker asks, curious.

She laughs.

"I'm a woman of many talents."

"Never said I doubt it," Parker says. "Just surprised that one of those involves walz music."

She grins.

"Not saying I'm the greatest at a waltz, but I'm a quick study. Plus I think enthusiasm has to count for something."

Parker grins, raises his glass, "To continuing to do activities where enthusiasm counts."

Having no glass, she curtseys instead.

"Amen to that."

"How's your kitten?" he asks. "Named yet?"

She grins.

"Still wobbling around. Hasn't quite mastered jumping onto the bed yet, but he's determined. Named him Clay, short for Claymore."

Parker shakes his head. "Wait. I knew the cat's name. The pony. he have a name yet?"
