Melpomene slept deeply without dreaming, and only woke up when the light between the curtains fell across her eyes.

It was a nice way to wake up. So now, as she opens her eyes, she stirs only slightly, and then settles back into a comfortable position.

"Macy's? Really?" She looks pitifully at him.

"She's watched the Thanksgiving parade on television every year since she's had a TV," he says. "That, and Rockefeller Center, are New York for her."

"That... is unfortunate, to say the least."

[mechanicalswans]

"So you've got a golden opportunity to show her the real New York. It'll be a lot of fun, I promise."

She sighs.

"Okay... just for you."

[mechanicalswans]

"I owe you for it," he smiles. "You can name your favor, and it's yours."

[tragic_mask]

"I'll call it in, don't you worry about that," she says.

[mechanicalswans]

"I still owe you for when you delivered my sculpture for me that time when I was sick," he says. "I'm just going to keep owing you more and more."

"Soon, you'll be my slave," she says, with a mock-ominous tone.

[mechanicalswans]

"I'm sure you'll be a fair and just master," he says with a smile.

[tragic_mask]

"I'd like to think so, at least."

[mechanicalswans]

"I'd never have cause to protest my treatment," he says, "and if I did, who would I protest it to? So far, I could not be happier."

"I can be perfectly cruel," she says, with a serious face. "I've just decided to treat you nicely thus far. For giving me the mask."

[mechanicalswans]

"I sealed my own fate with that, it seems," he murmurs. "But I'll take whatever consequences may come from it."

"I'll remember this verbal contract," she says.

"I am a man of my word," he says. "Always have been. Lucky for you, eh?"

"Quite," she says.

And they proceed along the sidewalk.
